Back-to-School Deep Clean: Refreshing Your Montreal Home for Fall

August in Montreal has that bittersweet quality: the last hot days on the terrasse, kids squeezing every drop out of summer, and the quiet knowledge that September is closer than it looks. Before the school bags come out and the schedule tightens up, this is genuinely the best time to give your home a focused reset. A clean, organized space at the start of fall makes the whole season feel more manageable.

Start with the Mudroom or Entryway

This space takes a beating all summer — sand, sunscreen, wet towels, sports equipment. Before fall layers (boots, backpacks, snowsuits — yes, already) reclaim every hook and shelf, clear it completely. Wipe down all surfaces, wash any fabric bins or basket liners, and vacuum the corners where grit accumulates. A clean entryway in early September is a gift to your future self.

Refresh the Kids' Rooms

Summer means camp crafts, sandy gear stuffed under beds, and forgotten snacks in desk drawers. Take advantage of the transition to do a proper clear-out:

  • Pull everything out from under the bed and vacuum thoroughly — dust bunnies multiply fast in humid weather.
  • Wipe down desks, shelves, and light switches with a damp microfibre cloth and a mild all-purpose cleaner.
  • Launder all bedding, including mattress protectors and pillow covers. Montreal's August humidity means moisture can linger in fabrics longer than you'd expect.
  • Declutter outgrown school supplies before new ones arrive — donate what's still usable.

Tackle the Kitchen After a Summer of Heavy Use

If you've been cooking and entertaining since June, your kitchen has earned a thorough clean before fall routines kick in.

  • Degrease the range hood filter — soak it in hot water and dish soap for 20 minutes, scrub, and rinse. It likely hasn't been touched all summer.
  • Wipe down cabinet fronts, especially around the stove and handles where grease and hand oils build up.
  • Clean the inside of the fridge and toss condiments, leftovers, and summer sauces that won't survive the transition to fall meal prep.
  • Check the seals on your fridge and freezer doors — humidity can cause mold to grow in the rubber gaskets. A quick wipe with diluted white vinegar handles it.

Air Quality Before the Windows Close

Once Montreal nights cool down in late August and September, windows stay closed more often. Before that happens, change or clean your HVAC and ventilation filters — especially in apartments and condos where central air has been running hard. A clogged filter circulates dust and allergens all fall. If you have a heat recovery ventilator (HRV), this is also the time to clean its filters according to the manufacturer's instructions.

One Room You Probably Skipped All Summer

The living room. It sounds counterintuitive — it's used constantly — but deep cleaning behind and under furniture, vacuuming upholstery, and dusting baseboards tends to get skipped when you're in full summer mode. Give it 45 minutes with a vacuum and microfibre cloths and it'll feel noticeably fresher when you're back to spending cozy evenings in it come September.

You don't need to do all of this in one day. Even spreading these tasks across the last two weekends of August means you'll hit fall feeling ahead of the game rather than already behind. And if life is just too full right now — that's what we're here for.
